MINI-VERTICAL OF CASANOVA DI NERI BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO TENUTA NUOVA
In recent years, the estate of Casanova di Neri has become world famous for its incredible Brunello di Montalcinos, in particular its super multi-vineyard blend Tenuta Nuova and single-vineyard Cerretalto. Owner Giacomo Neri has made four 100-point wines already in his career: the 2006 Casanova di Neri Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova and the 2001, 2006 and 2010 Casanova di Neri Brunello di Montalcino Cerretalto.
Meanwhile, Giacomo made admirable Brunellos in 2009 and 2008, in less than perfect grape growing conditions. The 2007 Tenuta Nuova is a close red to the perfect 2006 vintage, writes James. In the highly-hailed 2010 vintage, the winery’s regular Brunello excelled as well. It is “excellent quality for the standard bottling of this winery,”. The two wines were recently showcased by Giacomo Neri himself at a wine dinner in Bangkok organized by local importer Gfour. Both wines are perfect for drinking now.
Below are five of the Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuovas tasted by James from the 2006 to 2010 vintages. Click on wine names for tasting notes and scores. There’s also a video where Giacomo speaks in detail about the perfect 100-point 2006 Tenuta Nuova vintage.
CASANOVA DI NERI BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO 2006 TENUTA NUOVA TASTING NOTE
Score 100 points
So much ripe fruit here with currants and sultanas, yet fresh and very clean. Dark berries too. Incredible ripe Sangiovese character. Full body, with masses of fruit and chewy tan nins. Plus, there’s black licorice and dried berries. Give it time to soften. What a bottle. Will it ultimately be better than 2001 Tenuta Nuova? Yes. Best after 2013.
CASANOVA DI NERI BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO 2007 TENUTA NUOVA TASTING NOTE
Score 97/100
This is not the perfect 100-point 2006, but damn close. Loads of black cherries and spices on the nose. Full-bodied, with a beautiful core of fruit. Long and gorgeous finish. This is so long and beautiful to taste. Lasts for minutes. Try after 2015.
CASANOVA DI NERI BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO 2008 TENUTA NUOVA TASTING NOTE
This is very floral with blackberries on the nose. It's full-bodied, with velvety tannins and a ripe fruit, caramel and berry aftertaste. Delicious for the vintage. One of the wines of the vintage. Better in 2015.

A wine with ripe blueberry and cherry character, and a smoky undertone. Mineral, too. Full body with chewy tannins and a fresh finish. Excellent for the vintage. Better in 2015.
